Massive X-Class Solar Flare Triggers Temporary Communications Blackout in Some Areas
NASA has confirmed that a powerful X-class solar flare erupted from the sun on April 24. Thanks to the space agency’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, there is photographic evidence of the solar event.
According to ScienceDaily, a solar flare is a major explosion in the sun’s atmosphere with an energy equivalent to tens of millions of hydrogen bombs. Science Daily adds that the energy associated with solar flares may take hours or even days to accumulate, but most flares released their energy in minutes.
While radiation from a flare cannot penetrate Earth’s atmosphere to physically impact humans on the ground, it can occasionally affect the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
